Remember to Remember the Lord: Something to sink your teeth into!

What do false teeth have to do with remembering to remember the Lord?

Well, when I was in college in the mid-70s the economy was struggling. I had to take a job at a local nursing home for minimum wage. While there, I learned some valuable life lessons that helped me later in ministry. The following story was not so much a lesson as an illustration from those days.

One night, an elderly lady woke up and began to search for her teeth. Not finding them where she’d left them, she assumed that someone had stolen her teeth. She decided to recover them. Pillowcase in hand, she quietly went through the entire nursing home. She took every set of teeth she could find and placed them in her pillow case. When she arrived back at her room she found her own teeth and went back to bed.

The next morning, I received an early phone call pleading with me to come in to help. That day we had to puree food for almost every resident in the home, until several dentists could come in and identify whose teeth belonged to whom.

It was the 70s version of the smoothie, but people were not lining up.

Only one person had their teeth that morning, and this dear lady had no memory of the night before. Her forgetfulness made for a very unhappy day for many of the folks that day.

Called to Remember the Lord

Do you struggle with forgetfulness when it comes to your relationship with the Lord? The Psalmist reminds us, “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the LORD, O my soul, AND forget none of His benefits…” (Psalm 103:1-2 NAS)

I wonder if one of the greatest difficulties of believers AND one of OUR biggest battles is our own forgetfulness! The Bible is a book of remembering! Passage after passage, event after event, story after story and book after book reminds us of many stunning truths about our Redeeming God.

One of these passages calling us to remember is 2 Peter 1:2-4: “Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge (i.e. learn, know and remember) of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing (i.e. look again and remember) that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge (i.e. remembering to remember) of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust (NAS).

But what happens if we forget? This passage goes on to tell us! “For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten (i.e. failure to remember) his purification from his former sins (NAS).

Drop the Pillowcase and Remember the Lord

Forgetfulness can have a harsh effect on our spiritual lives. Are you carrying a pillowcase around searching for something to sink your spiritual teeth into, while overlooking the meat of the Word? It’s time to drop the pillowcase, and pick up your Bible and look again at the “precious and magnificent promises” from God’s Word. Your Bible might be on the nightstand where you left it. It’s time to remember to remember the Lord!
